What is Identity Explore?

Identity Explore provides merchants with a centralized, real-time view of their customers at the identity level—offering enhanced visibility, explainability, and control. It enables merchants to explore how different accounts are clustered together, revealing the data points and behaviors that contribute to identity resolution. This transparency helps teams understand why certain connections exist.

As the front-end interface of the Identity Engine, Identity Explore serves as the explainability layer—translating complex backend logic into actionable insights. It provides a rare glimpse into Riskified’s identity graph, surfacing how accounts, orders, and data points are connected across the ecosystem  (note that Identity Engine is leveraging additional signals not exposed in the UI). This allows merchants to understand identity-level behavior, lifetime value, and risk signals in ways that traditional systems can’t offer.

Unlike static identity systems, Identity Explore is dynamic and real-time, continuously updating with every new transaction. This empowers merchants to stay ahead of emerging abuse patterns and make confident decisions that drive sustainable eCommerce growth.

Key Capabilities

• Comprehensive Identity Resolution: Merchants often face revenue loss with customers that are “gaming the system” by manipulating their order data in order to “appear” as if they are different customer identities and get their orders through. It becomes very difficult to stop these advanced abusers. However, Identity Explore has the ability to detect order data obfuscation and cluster multiple separate accounts into a single customer identity. With tagging, data enrichment, behavioral analytics, engineered features, device fingerprint, and a global merchant network, Riskified can provide your team with clear customer history that your team can review and take action on.
• High Level Identity Impact: Merchants can see the "big picture” metrics on an identity, as Identity Explore consolidates all order and claim (refund/returns) information.
• Detailed Analysis: The platform provides an "Identity View" to see the primary email and all accounts associated with an identity. It displays "Identity Clusters" that include Registered Accounts, Guest Accounts, and Network Accounts, visually representing accounts linked by shared attributes such as address, email address, phone number, and credit card. Geolocation data, including IP locations, billing addresses, and shipping addresses, can also be viewed. Riskified's network is crucial for building these identity clusters, as it includes accounts from other merchants that could not be recreated with just one merchant's data. Merchants can drill down to see granular metrics and activity of individual accounts belonging to an identity
• Customer Segment Discovery: Through its "All Identities List" feature, you can conduct proactive discovery across entire segments of suspicious behaviors vs. high-value customers and facilitate faster decision-making
• Take Action: You can block an entire identity from future purchases within Identity Explore. This is a robust solution in comparison to our basic Business Block List feature (where you add a single data point to block), as Identity Blocking will prevent any future orders even if the customer tries to make different customer accounts in the future.

Fighting Abuse: Identity Explore Paired with Policy Protect

Identity Explore is a key capability that enhances Riskified’s Policy Protect product, which uses machine learning to detect and prevent policy abuse in real-time. This has enabled leading retailers to save millions of dollars by preventing 15 times more abusive returns and refund claims, detecting nearly 95% of unauthorized resellers.

These 2 products working together moves beyond simply identifying names and addresses to understanding patterns of behavior and how they interact in the digital world. This enables merchants to assess risk on an individual basis, making it easier to distinguish between otherwise profitable customers who might occasionally misuse policies (e.g., using multiple email addresses for coupons) and outright criminal fraud. 

A significant dilemma for merchants is the cost of maintaining generous policies in the face of rampant abuse. By confidently stopping abusers, Policy Protect (powered by Identity Explore) helps merchants return to offering the generous policies (like refunds and returns) that are important for winning new customers and retaining loyal ones, without jeopardizing profitability.
